Black and White Squares Falling Into a Vortex
Two colors are all this checkerboard shower curtain uses, and the whole effect comes from what it does with them: a rigid black and white check across the flat surface that warps and accelerates toward the centre, the squares stretching and shrinking until they spiral into what looks like a bottomless shaft in the middle of the panel. There is no grey anywhere, no shading and no third tone, so the depth is created purely by the geometry of the distortion. Around the edges the check stays square and orderly, which is what makes the collapse at the centre so convincing. Standing close to it, the floor of the room appears to drop away, and people entering a bathroom for the first time reliably stop and look at it.

Optical Black and White Against a Colored Wall
Because it is strictly two-tone, it drops into any color scheme without negotiation, and it looks particularly good against a painted wall in duck egg or sage where the neutrality of the panel lets the wall carry the color. Keep the floor plain: a patterned tile underneath destroys the illusion. It is the most graphic thing in our modern shower curtains, and the Modern Shower Curtain Ideas panel offers a calmer route into the same monochrome geometry.

Questions, answered.
Partly. Pulled flat across the opening the depth effect is at its strongest, and gathered to one end it becomes an abstract ripple of black and white. Most people hang it closed for that reason. It never looks broken, only different.
The check is large-scale rather than fine, so it does not shimmer or vibrate the way a tight optical pattern can. Sensitivity varies, but most people stop noticing it within a week. If small high-contrast patterns bother you, this is not the panel to choose.
Slightly below the middle of the panel, which puts it around waist height on a standard drop. That position is what makes it read as a hole in the floor rather than a tunnel in a wall. Viewed straight on from a couple of paces back, the effect is strongest.
It prints as a dense true black against an unbroken white, with no grey in between. That contrast is the whole mechanism of the design. Washing cool and keeping chlorine off it is what preserves it.
