Red Poppies Over an Ink-Washed Ground

The red and black shower curtain is printed on woven polyester with a matte face, and that matte surface is what makes the artwork read correctly: five red poppies on thin dark stems, painted with visible bleed at the petal edges, standing over a ground of black and grey ink washes, splatter and dry-brush marks on white. A glossy panel would put a sheen across those washes and flatten them. Here the marks keep their depth, so the ground looks painted rather than photographed and the reds sit forward of it. The poppies are the only saturated colour anywhere on the panel.
