A Lit Lotus Floating on Dark Water
The Black and Pink Floral Shower Curtain works on a single strong contrast: a pink and gold lotus, lit from within, floating on still black water under a deep aubergine sky. The bloom and its reflection sit at the center of the panel and everything around them falls off into near-black, so the light in the flower is doing all the work. The reflection below the bloom is rendered as a broken mirror of it, softer and slightly out of register, which is what gives the still water its sense of depth.

This is a panel for an evening bathroom, the kind lit by a couple of warm bulbs rather than a bright ceiling fixture, where the dark ground reads as depth instead of gloom. Set it against pale tile and let a single brass fitting pick up the gold in the petals. Twelve rust-resistant metal grommets carry the header, and on a dark panel that hardware choice matters, since a plastic eyelet that has begun to yellow shows badly against black. Both, depending where you look. The upper panel is a deep aubergine that gradates down to a near-black at the waterline. Under warm light the purple reads clearly; under cool light most of it looks black.
It is printed rather than metallic, so it does not reflect. The impression of glow comes from the contrast against the black water rather than from any sheen in the ink.
It can if the tile is also dark. Against white or light grey tile the black ground reads as a deliberate accent, but in an already dim room with beige or brown surfaces it will absorb what light there is.
