The palette on this blue and brown fabric shower curtain is really two bands meeting on a curve: an upper half graded from deep marine through turquoise to almost white at the horizon, and a lower half of sunlit dune in gold, amber and soft brown shadow. There is no detail to speak of beyond the ridge line and the ripples in the sand, which is what makes it behave like a colour field rather than a photograph. The join between the two is the whole composition. The ridge runs diagonally rather than flat, which gives the composition movement and stops the two halves from reading as a simple horizontal split.

Colour Blocking Where the Tile Is Plain

Because it works as two large areas of colour, it does the job of a painted feature wall in a rented bathroom with plain white tile, and the gold half is warm enough to carry brass or bronze fittings.
