Clownfish and Blue Tangs Over a Crowded Reef
Color is doing all the work on these bright colored shower curtains, and there is a lot of it: an underwater photograph of a tropical reef with clownfish in orange and white, blue tangs, yellow butterflyfish and a shoal of small silver-blue fish scattered across the upper water, all set against coral heads in ochre, lilac and green. The sea itself supplies the background, graduating from a pale turquoise near the surface to a deeper cobalt at the lower edge, so the whole panel is essentially blue with warm color swimming through it. Nothing is stylised: the coral texture, the sand and the fish markings are all photographic. In a room with white tile it reads as a lit aquarium rather than as a printed picture.

Photographed, with real coral texture and accurate fish markings rather than drawn shapes. That is what gives the water its depth and the sand its grain. Children tend to treat it as a spotting exercise for that reason.
Less than you would expect, because the blue water covers most of the surface and the bright fish are small punctuation within it. From the doorway the panel reads as blue. It is only up close that the color count registers.
The middle band, where most of the larger fish swim, sits roughly at adult eye height on a 71-inch drop. The coral occupies the lower third and is at child height, which is generally the popular half. The pale open water fills the top.
