Six Rubber Ducks Lined Up in a Band of Bathwater

Bath time is the whole brief for these childrens bathroom shower curtains, and the design does not pretend otherwise: six yellow rubber ducks, photographed as glossy three-dimensional objects, sit in a row across a band of pale blue water that runs along the lower third of the panel, with a scatter of soap bubbles breaking the surface behind them. The largest duck stands slightly proud of the line in the centre, the rest angled at small variations so the row does not read as mechanical. Above the water the ground is plain white, which keeps the whole thing bright and stops the blue from dominating a small room. It is a joke a two-year-old understands immediately and a design an adult can live with, which is a narrower target than it sounds.

How high up the panel does the water band sit?

It occupies roughly the lower third, which puts the ducks at the eye level of a child sitting in the bath. Standing up, an adult looks mostly at the white ground above them. That is deliberate rather than accidental.

Are the ducks photographed or drawn?

Photographed, with real highlights on the plastic and soft shadows where they meet the water. That is what makes them look like objects a child could pick up rather than illustrations. The bubbles are photographic too.

Will it still look right once the children are older?

It is firmly a bath-time design and will feel young once nobody in the house takes baths. Because nothing on it is licensed, it ages less badly than a character print. Expect a few good years rather than a decade.
