All of the head and shoulders, which is the whole subject: the photograph is cropped tight and the lower third is deliberately blurred. Drawn fully across, the face sits at roughly eye height on a standard rod.
It is part of the photograph, a soft out-of-focus white that the dog appears to be resting on. It is not a printed block, so it carries subtle tonal variation rather than being a flat area.
It helps. The lower white section keeps this one from reading as a solid dark rectangle, which is why it works in rooms where a full black panel would be too heavy. In a windowless bathroom, a cool bulb keeps the greys accurate.
