The subject on this lilac shower curtain is a human skull seen three-quarters on, with only the brow, eye socket and jaw left visible: everything else is overgrown with roses, hydrangea heads, violets and small butterflies in lavender, plum and dusty mauve. The flowers spill past the skull to fill the panel edge to edge. Because the palette never leaves the violet family, the effect is decorative rather than grim. The butterflies are the smallest elements and they carry the only pale highlights on the panel, which is what keeps a dense floral from turning into a single mass of purple. They also break up the outline of the skull.

That depends on the household. The skull is heavily softened by flowers and reads as decorative rather than macabre, but it is unmistakably a skull. It is not a print for a young child's bathroom.
Roughly a third: the brow, one eye socket and part of the jaw. The rest is covered by blooms. Some people take a moment to see it at all, which is the point of the composition.
Only small amounts of green in the leaves and a little cream in the rose highlights. Everything else stays within lavender, plum and mauve, which is what holds a busy image together.
