The Manly Shower Curtains photograph an English bulldog stretched out on a black leather armchair, wearing a straw fedora, a lit cigar clamped in its jaw with a real thread of smoke rising, and a balloon glass of brandy held between its front paws. Behind the chair is a grey damask wall in soft focus, which is what keeps the whole thing looking like a portrait sitting rather than a cut-out gag. Everything in the frame is genuinely photographed and then composited, so the fur, the leather and the glass all carry the same light, and that consistency is why the joke survives being seen every day.
