Two Scarlet Macaws Perched on a Bare Branch

The composition on this parrot shower curtain is two birds and nothing else: a pair of scarlet macaws side by side on a weathered branch, one facing the camera and one turned away, their tails crossing and hanging below the perch. Behind them the jungle foliage is thrown out of focus into a wall of dark green, which throws the red, cobalt and yellow of the plumage forward. The birds occupy the centre third of the panel. Because the two birds are turned different ways, one head on and one in profile, the pair reads as a photograph of a moment rather than as a staged composition.

Is the background sharp or blurred?

Deliberately blurred, as it would be in a photograph taken with a wide aperture. That is what pushes the birds forward and stops the jungle from competing with the plumage.

Does the foliage make the panel heavy?

It is dark around the edges and bright in the middle. The foliage is a deep green and covers most of the surface, so in an unlit bathroom the panel reads as dark with a bright centre.

Will the red fade in a sunny bathroom?

Scarlet holds better than most reds but will soften over years in hard direct light. Pulling the panel to the shaded end of the rod between showers is the single thing that extends it most.
