Washing a High-Contrast Print Without Losing Its Edge

Everything about the red and teal shower curtain depends on the contrast holding: a symmetrical kaleidoscopic form built from fine turquoise, scarlet and gold linework, floating on a solid black ground. Soap film is the real threat rather than fading, because a grey haze settling over black flattens the whole thing and the pattern loses its glow long before any colour goes. A cool wash every few weeks rather than an occasional deep clean is what keeps it looking the way it did in the packet. The form itself is intricate: dozens of fine strokes radiate from a central axis and resolve, depending on how long you look, into either a mask or a flower.

  • Two sizes: 59 x 71 and 71 x 71 inches
  • Woven polyester, printed on the front
  • 12 grommets in silver-toned metal
  • 12 hooks packed with the curtain
  • Anti-stain and anti-mildew treatment
  • Water-repellent, machine wash at 86 F

A Symmetrical Graphic for a Dark Painted Room

Black grounds behave oddly in bathrooms: in a white room the panel becomes a hole in the wall, while in a room already painted charcoal or deep green it reads as depth and the bright linework glows off it. The second is the better use. Metallic fittings in brass or copper pick up the gold in the pattern. It sits within our colorful shower curtains despite the dark base, and for another panel that puts saturated colour over an aged dark ground, the Heritage Shower Curtain works a very different subject to a similar effect.

Questions, answered.

Very. The linework is printed at close to full saturation on an unbroken black ground, which is the highest contrast combination on any panel in this range. Under a dim bulb the black recedes further and the turquoise appears to float.

More than any other ground colour, and that is the honest drawback. Dried mineral spray leaves a pale film that is invisible on a print and obvious here. Rinsing the lower edge under the shower head after use prevents almost all of it.

It mirrors left to right rather than top to bottom, so the upper and lower halves of the form differ while the two sides match exactly. Hanging the panel with the rod level matters for that reason — a tilt makes the symmetry look wrong.

It will read as a strong graphic statement rather than as part of the room, since nothing else picks the colours up. That can be the point. If you want it to feel integrated, a black mirror frame or a dark bath mat gives the panel something to belong to.
