Stars and Stripes Printed Over Split Timber Boards
The Usa Shower Curtain prints the American flag onto a photograph of weathered planking, so the stripes follow the boards and the paint appears cracked and worn away along the grain, with the timber showing through in places. The blue of the canton has gone chalky and the reds have dulled to a brick tone, which is what stops it looking like a new flag and lets it read as a piece of painted barn siding instead. The board joints run vertically and cut across the horizontal stripes, which is what gives the panel its structure and keeps a familiar image from reading as a printed poster.

Printed. The panel arrives with the distressing already in the image: flaking paint, exposed grain and faded colour are all part of the photograph, not damage in transit.
The 59-inch cut trims the design at the sides rather than the top and bottom, so the full run of stripes is present in both widths. What you lose is a little of the timber at the edges.
Clearly, and that is the effect. The paint sits in the surface of the boards rather than on top of them, so the grain reads through the red and blue as well as in the bare patches.
