Because the background is unbroken black and the animal occupies the lower half, the panel reads as a large photographic print hung on a rod rather than as a patterned textile.

Partly, and it is worth planning for. The head sits centrally, so drawing the curtain fully across keeps the face flat and readable while the black background takes the gathering. Pushed to one side, the portrait compresses and only the lit edge of the mane stays visible.
It is a photographic black, so it carries a small amount of tonal variation rather than being one flat value. Next to a solid black panel it reads very slightly warmer and less absolute, which is what makes the portrait sit in space rather than on a wall.
Yes. Individual hairs in the mane and the catchlight in the eye are both resolved, which is unusual at this size. It holds up when you are standing at the sink two feet away.
