A Palette-Knife Tree Built From Thick Impasto Color
Everything about how you look after these bright colorful shower curtains follows from what the image is: a reproduction of an oil painting laid on with a palette knife, where the canopy of the tree is built from short slabs of crimson, magenta, ochre and viridian, and the grass beneath is scraped in with the same blunt strokes. The paint texture is photographed rather than simulated, so you can see the ridges where the knife lifted, and the color sits in unblended patches instead of gradients. A dark trunk anchors the middle and the sky barely shows through the leaves. Because the whole surface is high-saturation warm color with no white ground, it is a panel where fading would show quickly, and that makes the wash routine the thing that determines how long it looks new.

You can see it, but you cannot feel it. The ridges and knife marks are photographed from the original painting and printed flat, so the panel is smooth to the touch while reading as heavily textured. Under a raking light the illusion is convincing.
Both, in roughly equal measure. The upper canopy is dominated by crimson and magenta while the lower branches and the ground run green and ochre. From a distance the panel averages out to a warm mid-tone rather than reading as either color.
It depends entirely on the resolution, and this one is scanned at a size that holds the knife marks rather than blurring them into mush. What makes it work is that the artwork fills the panel edge to edge instead of floating in a printed frame. Nothing on it imitates a canvas edge.
