Look at the Gold Floral Shower Curtain from across the room and you see a skull; step closer and the whole thing dissolves into flowers. Petals, scrolls and leaves in old gold, dull coral and faded olive interlock to form the brow, the cheekbones and the jaw, with the eye sockets left as flat black holes where the ground shows through. Everything sits on solid black, and the drawing is fine enough that the illusion only resolves at a distance of a few feet. A thin scatter of loose petals falls away from the jaw toward the lower edge, breaking the outline before it reaches the hem.

Much less than in a photograph. Standing at the sink you mostly read flowers and scrollwork, and the face only assembles itself once you step back three or four feet. That shift is the point of the design.
It is printed flat, with no foil or metallic thread, but the tonal range from pale champagne to deep bronze reads as metal under warm light. Under cool light it looks more like ochre paint.
A dark ground in direct sun will lose depth over a long period, more so than a pale one. Hanging it out of the path of a south-facing window is enough to avoid it.
No, it is applied to the front face only. The reverse is a soft grey ghost of the motif, which is what you see from outside the shower.
