Mauve is the whole subject of the mauve floral shower curtain: a spray of pink phalaenopsis orchids sits sharp in the right half of the frame while everything behind it dissolves into a soft violet-pink haze, and a stack of dark wet stones anchors the lower corner. The background is not a colour so much as a blur, which is why the panel reads as atmosphere rather than as a photograph of flowers. In the right half, with the flowers at roughly chest height and the stones below them. On a rail at conventional height the blooms land above a tub rim rather than behind it.
It is a real photographic blur, taken with the flowers in focus and the ground behind them thrown out. That is why it does not look like a gradient applied over a picture.
It sits between the two and shifts with the light. Under a warm bulb it goes pink; under daylight it holds more violet, which is what keeps it working next to grey.
