This red blue shower curtain is a single visual gag done properly: a tabby kitten with oversized amber eyes has burst head and paws through a Union flag, the fabric torn in a rough triangle around it with the edges curling back. The flag fills the whole panel behind, its red, white and blue rendered flat and saturated so the animal's brown fur reads warm against it. Nothing else is on the panel. The eyes are the sharpest thing on the panel and sit almost exactly at the centre, which is what makes the image land before you have registered the flag behind it.

Is the torn effect convincing?

Reasonably. The tear edges are drawn with curling fabric and a shadow behind the animal, which sells the depth from a normal distance. Very close up it reads as a composite, as this kind of image always does.

Does the flag dominate or the cat?

The cat, because it is the only warm-toned element and sits dead centre with the eyes at the focal point. The flag functions as a backdrop, which is why the design works at all.

How does the red hold up?

Flag red is a saturated pigment and holds well in cool washes, though a bright window will lift it over a couple of years. The blue is the more stable of the two, so any fade shows as the red softening first.
