A Breaking Wave With the Sun Inside the Barrel

The photograph on this blue and yellow shower curtain is taken from inside the curl: a wave mid-break, the water arching overhead in deep teal and bottle green, with the low sun sitting directly in the mouth of the barrel and throwing gold across the surface. That gold is the only warm color in the frame and it occupies the exact centre, which is why the panel needs a drop that keeps the sun at eye level rather than up near the rail. Spray is frozen sharp along the lip of the wave, and the water goes nearly black at the edges of the frame.

Where does the sun sit on the panel?

Roughly in the middle, inside the mouth of the wave, which puts it near eye level on a standard 71-inch drop. On the 79-inch cut everything shifts upward by several inches. That is the main thing to consider when picking a size.

Is the image dark overall?

The water is deep, but the sun and the white spray keep it from reading as a dark panel in the room. In a bathroom with little natural light it can look heavier than in the photograph. Pale walls and a light floor balance it.

Does the photograph wrap around the folds well?

The composition is broad and horizontal, so gathering the panel compresses the wave without breaking it into unreadable pieces. Pushed fully to one end it becomes an abstract band of teal and gold. Hung across the opening it reads as intended.
