Chipped Turquoise Paint Over Weathered Planks

What keeps these rustic shower curtains convincing is the state of the printed paint. The image is a run of vertical boards, each one a slightly different width, with turquoise paint flaking away in irregular patches to show the grey-brown timber underneath. Nail heads, splits and knots are all printed in. That distressed look is also what makes washing straightforward — there is no clean field of colour to protect and no crisp edge to blur, so ordinary wear on the panel simply reads as more of the same weathering. Colour placement helps too: the turquoise is heaviest across the middle of the panel and thins toward both edges, where the bare timber takes over, so the busiest part of the print sits at eye level and the areas that see the most splash are the plainest.

Do the printed planks line up if two panels hang side by side?

They do not, since each panel carries the same image rather than a continuing one. Two hung together will show two identical runs of boards, which is noticeable if they meet in the middle of a wide opening. A single wider panel is the better answer there.

Is the turquoise the dominant colour or the wood?

The paint covers most of the surface, so turquoise is what you see first, with the timber showing through in flakes and along the board edges. From across the room it reads as a painted blue-green panel rather than as a wood one.

Does a photographic wood print look cheap in daylight?

It depends on scale, and here the boards are printed close to life size, which is what sells the effect. Problems arise when a timber print is enlarged so far that the grain becomes abstract. In strong daylight you can tell it is cloth, but the proportions stay believable.
